Thousands of years ago in the shadow of a vast mountain range, a race of dragons awoke. Not knowing who they were, where they came from or how they fell asleep in the first place, the dragons began to make a place for themselves in the world. Perhaps the most magnificent of this new race was Agathon. In a time of unprecedented peril for their kind, the dragons turned to Agathon to save their species from the constant human threat. Thus, the great plan was born.
Today, life for Petros Renault couldn’t be more perfect. As he prepares to graduate from university and head off to an elite post-graduate program he’s also preparing to ask the girl he loves to marry him. Everything was perfect, until the headaches came. Struggling to understand the whats and whys of the pain which became his new reality, Petros discovers his mysterious connection to an ancient race thought only to be the stuff of legends and myth.

The Pride eBook John Campea

I bought this book because I know John Campea from Movie Talk and usually enjoy his work. Unfortunately, this book is an exception. It's pretty bad!

There are several problems with the book. Mainly, the writing isn't that good. Lots of one word sentences, one sentence paragraphs and even one word paragraphs. No carefully crafted sentences that accurately convey distinct and subtle nuances. Instead it seems to me that most of book reads like a monotonous stream of consciousness like this: "He didn't know what to do. Or did he? Maybe. And yet... Did he know? Perhaps".

Also the characters are one-dimensional and not very interesting. The attempt to portray Petros as the main protagonist falls flat. In the end Justinian felt more like the main character to me, simply because he is present in most of the story arcs. But even the character of Justinian never really comes to live.

I will give the book 2 stars instead of 1 star, because there were a few things in it quite enjoyed: I liked the opening chapter. The whole story of the dragons awakening and coming into their own I thought was somewhat interesting. Also the string of mysterious murders peaked my curiousity, though its eventual resolution in a very predictable plot twist was very unsatisfying and badly executed.

All this leaves me wondering what kind of editing, if any, this book received. This book should not have been published in its present form and clearly should have been completely rewritten. I believe a critical editor would have seen to that.

The Pride eBook John Campea Reviews

I actually like the writer as a person to much to give an honest review of this tittle.
When I first started reading this novel I didn't think much of it, the initial chapters were confusing and overly detailed. But then it started delving into the history of the Dragons, and the mythological nature really kept me invested. The story of Agathon and Yara alone would have made a fantastic book. The story of Justinian was equally fantastic. While Petros as a character felt almost too overpowered, a part of me still cheered for him in the third act. The story is great, John's well known in the YouTube world for being a fan of superhero films, and this read like Thor and Superman were combined and turned into Dragons. I truly ended up loving this book by the time I got to the end. The problem was, whoever John got to edit this book for him, especially if he paid them. They did an awful job. Several times I found myself getting confused with who was speaking, due to incorrect pronouns. It feels like someone did spell check, nothing came up, so they figured it was done. That's a shame, because the story is fantastic, but I can see people being turned off by the grammatical errors that interrupt the flow of the story.
I love dragons. I found this a fascinating take on their mythos. I never, ever, saw the end coming.
I'm a fan of John Campea from when he was on Movie Talk, which led me to supporting him in funding this book along with buying it. That being said, it is really only an okay book. There are interesting elements that are touched upon and I would have liked to see more of. There are other parts that could have been skipped over. I will say this. Did not see the ending coming. That makes me intrigued for the next one.

What I liked The history of the dragons. I would have liked to see this expanded upon and not have it cut in and out with the present day.

What was "meh" to me The present day stuff. The main character. He had a little too much going for him. He was supposed to be smart, but is really bad at explaining his point/reasoning. He'll come to a conclusion all on his own with little or no evidence to suggest that conclusion and says to everyone else, "Think about it. It makes sense." as his reasoning.

The main characters storyline suffered from the story always cutting to the past, showing the history of the dragons, and then coming back to the present but at a later part than you left it at. So the MC's storyline keeps hopping forward and is not very grounded. It is almost two books in one. The history of the dragons and the present day about the MC. Because of that it suffers a bit.
I enjoyed watching John Campea, on Collider, and all the great work he and his team did there and continue to do. I bought this book based on curiosity and having read it, I can say it was simply OK. The many typos became exceedingly distracting, whoever was responsible for proof-checking did a mediocre job! The story itself had interesting aspects, however, much of it seemed derivative and the characters were not well developed. The plot was predictable and the relationships formulaic, the characters were not very relatable as the leads were all too perfect and the supporting characters were barely more than one dimensional. The pacing was also inconsistent leaning more to being slow and tedious at times. It was a commendable effort, with time I hope Mr Campea can develop his craft to a higher standard.
I will try and keep this short of sweet. The novel was a decent attempt for someone’s first time but unfortunately, like most self-publications, it falls short and belongs in the 1$ bargain bin at your local Walmart.

Let’s start with the positives. The plot was decent and there was one character, who was well motivated and well rounded. One. The rest of the character were flat and forgettable. Including the main character Petros, who is seems too perfect from his introduction. He contains no flaws and you never fear for his safety due to how overpowered he becomes by the end of the novel. The editing could use a little work and the author tends to tell more often rather than show.

I would still recommend that you buy this novel if you want a new twist on Urban Fantasy or just love Dragon Novels in general, but if your looking for an engaging story with well develop characters, I’m afraid to say your going to have to look elsewhere.
