Get Over Photographers Block
There may be times when you have lost your photographic Mojo, which is the equivalent of writer's block. In the Good and Geeky photography book there are solutions to this problem. A range of ideas to get your head back into the proper frame of mind for getting back into photography and enjoying it. There are solutions which will involve spending some money and are more technical. There are other solutions which are tricks of the mind to get you thinking like a photographer once more.

Using Apps to Sort your Photos
The book has links to tutorials to help you get the most from using Aperture on the Mac to organise and to work with your photos. The new Photos app from Apple which is coming in 2015 will not work in exactly the same way, but Aperture is going to be around for some time yet. In any case, there will be new chapters added to the book as soon as the new application becomes available. There are other tutorials and chapters about applications for stitching photos together to make panoramas, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography and about other ways to triage and sort out your photos on your computer.

Hello EVIL Cameras
Camera equipment is important and is continually improving. The tools we use to create our artistic photos are giving us more and more choices and better quality. The seachange which is occurring at the moment is the move from traditional single lens reflex SLR cameras to the mirrorless cameras. The way that technology is going, it will be soon the case that cameras with a mirror inside them will be a rarity. I include reviews in this book of my change to a Sony EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) Camera. With the improvements of the screens for the electronic viewfinder it seems that this is the way of the future.

Truth or Expressive Photo Art
There are so many approaches to photography, some like to go for a perceived truth in an image. Some of us prefer to go towards the idea that we should be creating photographic art with a no holds barred approach. Read the book and decide which side of the fence you want to be standing upon.

Geek Photography Good and Geeky eBook David Allen Wizardgold David Allen

Being a life-long, self-proclaimed geek, and a sometimes amateur photographer, I was immediately drawn to David Allen's book, Geek Photography. This book is full of tips on how to be a better photographer, not just someone who grabs and snaps without much though of the end result. For example he starts by stating "There is a big difference between taking pictures and making pictures. You can see this in the snaps that people have taken with which ever small camera compared to photographs that are made." This doesn't mean that you must spend tons of money on fancy equipment to be a good photographer. To the contrary you can make great photos with inexpensive gear with a little bit of planning, understanding of light, and lots of practice. By the same token you can make lousy photos with the highest quality gear!

I have just started reading this book so you must consider my impressions to be preliminary. I'll add to my thoughts once I have spent more time with the book.

One of the things that seems to pervade this book is an attempt to rekindle enthusiasm for photography with various tips and tricks. This resonates with me since my involvement in photography has waned in recent years and I'm hoping to get a jump start back into it. Geek Photography provides a number of good tips for overcoming "Photographer's Block" such as giving yourself a project, setting yourself a phographic daily task, experimenting with lighting conditions, and making a project that tells a story.

It helps that David Allen uses a Mac for processing his images and videos (my favorite computer). There is a fair amount of information about some of the newer post processing applications available on the Mac. He includes a discussion of HDR, however I'm not a big fan of HDR due to the ease of overdoing it and ruining (in my opinion) some excellent images.

I find his comments about the advantages of mirrorless cameras to be interesting since I am just in the process of switching from a DSLR to a smaller "EVIL" Olympus camera. According to David, EVIL stands for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lenses.

It is going to take a while for me to absorb the lessons provided by Geek Photographer, but my initial read makes me think that it will be worth the effort. My only criticism at this point is the fact that the subjects tend to ramble a little and jump around among the various topics. I think some careful editing could help and could also eliminate some duplication and production errors. The Forward particularly could use some attention since it doesn't really help the reader get a sense of the book or why it was written.

I look forward to spending time with this book and am anticipating some of the other Good and Geeky Books that are promised at the end. I also intend to explore some of the many video tutorials that David Allen has on his YouTube channel Wizardgold.

Geek Photography Good and Geeky eBook David Allen Wizardgold David Allen Reviews

This is a great short book full of a ton of great tips. Tons of value on each page and definitely worth the small price. Would recommend to all of my geek friends.
Interesting read !
A lovely collection on useful tips ranging from the more esoteric to the very practical. Stuck for some inspiration, no problem, there's a chapter full of suggestions for getting out of creative ruts. Wondering what this new fangled EVIL photography is all about, no problem, that gets explained too.
‘Geek Photography’ by David Allen Wizardgold is a very enjoyable book to bring you up to speed on many of the latest options on digital photography from camera choices to post-processing software. The book goes into enough detail to explain how things are done without getting over complicated. It reads like a collection of thoughtful reviews and how-to’s on digital photography with a focus on, but not limited to, Mac users. A fine book for beginners with some experience and more seasoned users alike.

The writer gives a lengthy explanation on his own camera, a Sony NEX-6, for both stills and video, and particulars about using this camera along with a Mac. But he also has had experience with a range of digital and SLR cameras.

I enjoy reading about people’s workflows and ‘Geek Photography’ offers plenty of that. The book goes into a thorough discussion for Mac users who are currently using Aperture and may be considering future options for photo management. The author has done his homework.

The software and hardware suggestions are current for January 2015. A glossary of terms would have been helpful but most can be found around the internet. There are a few typos here and there in the book. I expect these will be corrected in revised editions.

I liked the short anecdotes on how different photographs were taken Allen’s writing style is like having a friendly coach by your side as you take photographs. There are numerous links to how-to videos by the author and other suggested photography podcasts by others that highlight the ebook experience. Excellent suggestions all around. A ’Good and Geeky’ series is in the works. This offering is a good start.
This is a fine, succinct, easy-to-use guide for kick-starting your creativity and improving your photographs.

Although I used to shoot seriously (years ago, on film and slides), I’m less avid these days. So the earlier sections on composition, equipment, lighting, etc. were more valuable to me than the sections on post-processing — except for the sections on Waterlogue (which looks like it would be fun to try) and Aperturer.

Allen says Aperture (a Mac app) is soon to be superseded. I’ll be sorry to see it go. It’s very good for organizing and cataloguing photos. I did not know, however, that it is also a versatile post-processing tool. I will have to read those sections in detail and give it a try.

I also appreciated his reviews of EVIL photography. Next time I buy, I’ll look closely at EVIL cameras.

I found Allen’s own experiences with cameras and apps to be very helpful. And I do like most of his photographs at the end.

All in all, this is a book well worth having.
